Pick The Best Mats for Your Home Aerial Studio

In my 3 years of practicing aerial dance at home, i am guilty to have tried many options (including pillows and mattress which are not very safe) before I found out what type of mats I needed to invest for my practice.

I practice Aerial Hammock and Aerial Hoop at my low ceiling (2.7m) apartment, you can click to check out my dances and setup. I also have a unique need that it has to be practical and stylish for display for my home studio.

I hope this will help you out on picking the best mats for your home aerial studio.

Do you need a safety mat for your aerial studio?

Aerial dance is a dangerous activity. Whether it’s low ceiling or high ceiling, I will never get on the rig I feel unsure about, and always use safety mats to practice.

Can you use mattresses and pillows as safety mats?

I had a spare mattress and I tried to rely on that to catch me when I fall. It didn’t work at all even though mattresses are so bulky, landing on it didn’t feel totally safe. Besides it was just so not convenient to store or have around. It is probably why I have a fold-able one now.

Some believe the thick 8′ + crash mat is required for all aerial disciplines. If you have a lot of height or if you do drops frequently, I would definitely advise getting thick mats. If I do that at my low ceiling home I would lose lots of space to move. So this is what I prefer:

I like using this folding crash mat at home because it is large enough (4’x8′) and thick enough to land on it. It’s solid but soft at the same time. I can always catch my steps easily.

Once it’s folded it’s quite multi functional for other workout or even just use it as a second mini floor couch.

The only downsize with this folding crash mat is..

It is not made to grip onto the ground, so sometimes it can slip away if I fall in a weird way. Having the mat slipping away as I fell on it was quite scary, now I have added a large exercise mat underneath.

Other than aerials, I love doing workout and stretches, it works even for 2 people. If you want to see how much fun we have with our huge exercise mat, check out this 4 minutes videos.
