10 Basic Tricks on Aerial Hammock For Beginners

Whether you follow aerial yoga or aerial dance, getting familiar with these 10 basic hammock tricks will prepare you for the next level.

1. Back Flip (into the hammock)

  1. Lifting the legs up to a ball shape
  2. Lean Back in a ball shape

How it helps:
Work on your full body movement.
Prepare for tricks like aerial straddle and upside down splits.
Backflip

2. Front Balance

  1. Hammock under the hip
  2. Engage the glutes to bring the feet up high
  3. Engage the back to lift the chest up
  4. Optional: Work toward keeping the balance on the hammock without hands.

Front balance

3. Basic Sitting on Hammock

  1. Hammock under your knee
  2. Transfer the weight to the hammock. Lift the other foot off and bring it to sitting

4. Mermaid Pose

  1. From sitting, turn the hip to one side.
  2. Engage the glutes to keep a straight body
  3. Extend one arm out for the pose

5. Mermaid Variations

  1. From the Mermaid Pose, release the top leg and bend.

6. Basic Standing on Hammock

  1. Bend one leg and step the foot in the hammock.
  2. Adjust to stand directly under the rig to prevent swinging.
  3. Straighten the bent leg.
  4. Push the hip up and roll up to standing.
  5. Bring the free leg to the side to bring the hammock behind the waist.
 

7. Variations after Straddle

Three Variations after straddle:

  1. Bend both legs and bring them into the hammock. Straighten to press the legs down to sitting. (as shown)
  2. Bend one leg. Straighten to press to a pose (single leg wrap).
  3. Bend one leg, and hoop the other foot on the fabric. Climb and pull to a pose.

8. Single Leg wrap

  1. Start from a straddle position.
  2. Bend one leg to hook the fabric.
  3. Straighten to press the leg down.

9. Hip Lock

  1. From sitting after straddle, bring the left arm through the hammock to bring the body forward.
  2. Grab the right fabric, do a fan kick with your left leg to bring you to a hip lock position.

10. Double Leg Wrap

  1. Start from a straddle position.
  2. Bend one leg to hook the fabric.
  3. Straighten to press the leg down.
  4. Bring the free leg through the hammock and turn to wrap up.
