2. Be mindful about movement and form
3. Become a natural at basics
4. Refine the details
5. Think 80/20

1. Pay Attention to Your Warmup

One of the biggest mistakes I made as a beginner aerialist was skipping warmup. I would get too excited about dancing, and rush into it.

Skipping a warmup can lead to injuries. This is not only physically painful but can also be pretty demotivating.

You can avoid injuries by warming up. Take at least 10 minutes before your aerial dance practice to warm up.

2. Be Mindful About Movement and Form

In aerial dance, like in any other dance, esthetic matters. This means creating beautiful shapes with your body, moving to music, looking effortless. You want to invoke emotion and inspire those who are watching.

But even more important that esthetic is form.As a beginner, you should focus on getting stronger and increasing your range of motion.

When you are exercising, try to think about different parts of your body. Are you keeping your core strong while you’re doing that movement? Are your shoulders and neck tense?

I used to skip conditioning and stretching when time is tight. Because of this, I started experiencing pain and couldn’t train. If this sounds like you, check out My Physio Explains Aerial Training Mistakes video.

3. Become a natural on the basics

To get better at the basics, you will need to repeat them a lot. The goal is to make the moves feel natural to you. That way you will have a strong foundation for your dance. You can get started on the 10 tricks in Aerial Hammock Basic 1 and Basic 2, before advancing to more tricks and flows.

4. Refine the Details

The last step to master the basics is to refind the details. With just a little attention, you can turn what you already know into dances like pros! Check out the tips in the video above.

5. Try to think 80/20
