28 Feb 5 Drills to Learn How to Spin With Aerial Hammock Today
The best way to learn how to spin with the aerial hammock is to try it out for yourself. You can follow along with me:
The hardest thing about spinning in aerial dance is learning how to adapt to the feeling of being pulled in every direction. If you are struggling with this, don’t worry. We’ve all been there! All it takes is a little practice.
Before you start practicing your spins, you will need to attach a swivel to your hammock.
Make sure you have enough space to spin and don’t forget to use your safety mats. Since you need a strong core to control your spins, I recommend warming up with some abs exercises.
Spinning Drill #1
We’ll start with some basic movements and them move onto more challenging ones. The first movement you can try is to point your right leg straight out and then use the energy of that leg to pull you to the right.
Spinning Drill #2
Move your right leg into the hammock and get it around your thigh. This spin is very easy to control because the hammock is close to your core. Again, send the right leg to the right and allow your body to follow it. Lift the left leg off the ground.
Spinning Drill #3
Make sure that you are directly under the rig because otherwise you will spin all over the place. This can be dangerous if you don’t have a lot of space, like me.
The third spinning exercise is spinning from the knee. Keep your right leg in the hammock and move it towards your knee. Keep your right leg straight and follow it slowly to the right. Lift the left leg off the ground to gain a bit of speed.
Spinning Drill #4
Now, we will start with a fan kick. If you are new to aerial practice, try practicing fan kick and straddle without spinning.
Fan kick your right leg. Get your left knee up. Go into a straddle pose and then hook your left knee into the hammock. This will give you momentum and you will start spinning to the left.
You can also extend your leg for a faster spin.
Spinning Drill #5
The last exercise is a little bit harder because you will be spinning upside down. Lean on the hammock and then bring both of your knees to your left side. Open your legs to a straddle. To speed up, you can bring your knees in.
To slow down, stretch out your legs and arms into the space.
You may be feeling a bit dizzy when you start to spin with aerial hammock. Especially if you’re new. If that’s the case, make sure to check out the 10 tips that helped me with spinning.
